Insektenhotel aus dem Baumarkt
Insektenhotels können Sie zwar auch bereits fertig im Baumarkt kaufen, die meisten Exemplare erfüllen allerdings nur einen dekorativen Zweck und werden den wenigen aber doch sehr wichtigen Ansprüchen der kleinen Insekten nicht gerecht, sodass sie gar nicht erst angenommen werden. Im schlimmsten Fall stirbt die Brut, weil das Material in den Löchern ungeeignet ist. Der Großteil dieser Insektenhotels ist mit viel Stroh, Tannenzapfen, Rindenstücken und Holz ausgestattet. Diese billigen Füllstoffe sind für Insekten ungeeignet, sodass sie derartige Insektenhotels nicht bewohnen. Damit es die Insekten aber komfortabel und artgerecht haben, können Sie solch ein Insektenhotel für Wildbienen und Co. auch ganz einfach selbst bauen. Alles was Sie dafür benötigen sind Baumscheiben mit Löchern und Röhrchen mit ausreichendem Durchmesser.
Voraussetzungen
In erster Linie benötigen Sie einen Garten, der die entsprechende Umgebung mit heimischen Blüten und Pflanzen bietet. Denn ohne entsprechende Nahrung in der Umgebung werden sich die Insekten nicht in Ihrem Insektenhotel einnisten wollen. Die Nisthilfe für Insekten sollten Sie an einem sonnigen Standort platzieren, mit ausreichendem Schutz vor Wind und Regen. Zudem sollten Sie auf Weichholz verzichten, da es zu Splittern neigt und schnell reißt – das könnte gefährlich für die kleinen Insekten werden, da großes Verletzungspotenzial besteht.
Empfehlenswert ist daher, abgelagertes Hartholz wie Eiche oder Buche zu verwenden, denn je frischer das Holz, desto eher neigt es zu reißen. Um das Insektenhotel vor Feuchtigkeit zu schützen, sollten Sie es nicht auf dem Boden platzieren. Am besten befestigen Sie das Insektenhotel an der Wand oder lehnen es auf einem Tisch oder einem Wandregal an. Wenn diese Voraussetzungen erfüllt sind, können Sie mit dem Bauen loslegen.
Baumscheiben
Ideal für ein Insektenhotel sind Baumscheiben. Diese sollten Sie so schneiden, dass Sie etwa zwei bis neun Millimeter große Löcher seitlich in die Baumscheiben bohren können. Sie dürfen auf keinen Fall längst zur Holzfaser bohren, da sich ansonsten Risse in den Jahresringen bilden, in denen Feuchtigkeit leichter eindringen kann, wodurch sich Pilze bilden und die Brut angreifen können. Zusätzlich müssen Sie darauf achten, dass die Löcher von innen möglichst glatt sind. Ansonsten können sich die kleinen Insekten an ihren zarten Flügeln verletzen. Achten Sie auch stets darauf, dass Sie die Löcher in einem ausreichenden Abstand zueinander bohren. So verhindern Sie ebenfalls, dass sich Risse im Holz bilden.
Röhrchen
Neben Baumscheiben sind Röhrchen aus Bambus, Schilfrohr oder Halmen ebenfalls eine ideale Ausstattung für ein Insektenhotel. Achten Sie darauf, das Mark aus den Röhrchen zu entfernen, da die Insekten hole Räume benötigen, um sich dort einnisten zu können. Auch hierbei müssen Sie darauf achten, dass das Innere glatt und ohne rissige Faser ist, da sich die Insekten ansonsten verletzen könnten.
Zusätzlich sollten Sie die Enden der Halme abschleifen, um auch hier jegliches Risiko für die Insekten zu beseitigen. Zudem kann es durchaus vorkommen, dass die Röhrchen bei zu hoher Feuchtigkeit anfangen zu spleißen. Daher ist es wichtig, das Insektenhotel an einem trockenen Ort zu platzieren. Der Durchmesser der Röhrchen sollte nicht größer als 10 Millimeter sein und eine Länge von ca. 10 bis 15 Zentimeter haben, da die Insekten eher enge Räume bevorzugen. Das hintere Ende sollten Sie beispielsweise mit Ton oder Lehm verschließen.
Um die Röhrchen einfacher zu stapeln, können Sie Hohlziegel verwenden und die Löcher mit Bambus, Halmen oder Schilfrohr füllen. Das ist nicht nur praktisch, sondern sorgt auch für ein schöneres Gesamtbild.
Auf welche Materialien Sie verzichten sollten
Viele Insektenhotels sind mit Materialien wie Lehm, Stroh, Ziegeln oder Zapfen ausgestattet. Allerdings sind dies Materialien, die keinen notwendigen Zweck für die Tierchen erfüllen. Stroh kann zwar als Unterschlupf dienen, hat aber keinen weiteren Mehrwert für die Insekten. Notwendig sind hingegen Löcher, die Wildbienen und Co. einen sicheren Unterschlupf bieten.
Schutz vor Vögeln
Insektenhotel sind attraktive Orte für Vögel, um nach Futter zu suchen. Daher sollten Sie als zusätzlichen Schutz für die kleinen Tierchen ein Drahtgitter mit ausreichendem Abstand zum Insektenhotel anbringen. Auch ein Dach ist sinnvoll, um Vögel fernzuhalten. So haben Vögel keine Möglichkeit, in der Nähe des Unterschlupfs zu landen und die Insekten zu fressen.
